What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Contact forms

We are collecting and storing the data contained in our email newsletter signup form. This data includes name and email address.

Some of our contact forms include the ability to pay us for subscription-based services, such as hosting and support plans. Those contact forms include additional Personal Information required to process those payments, including, full name, business name, and credit card information. We store only the minimum amount of information on our own site to track those payments (the last four digits of the credit card) along with other Personal Information in the form.

Cookies

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

We use Google Analytics to track visits to our site. Google Analytics inserts up to two cookies in your browser to help track that behavior, but our Google Analytics data is anonymized.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

When you request our website from our hosting servers by clicking a link or typing the address into your address bar, we are collecting your IP address, which we share with our hosting company, WP Engine, and Google Analytics. Google Analytics may also insert up to two cookies in your browser to help us track how long you stay on the site and whether you return in a 30 day period.

Our Google Analytics data is anonymized in compliance with Google’s recommendations regarding privacy compliance.

Who we share your data with

We use MailChimp as our Email Service Provider and may transmit your name and email to that service. Forms that transmit this data include an explicit consent checkbox that remind you that we’ll be transmitting those items. In order to enable the deliverability of our contact form emails to our company email service provider , we use a third-party service called MailGun. In order to use this service, we transmit the entire contents of the contact form message and metadata to MailGun, who retains that information for 72 hours. We use Stripe as our Credit Card Payment Processor, and transmit personal data to Stripe as is necessary to process payments. This information includes full credit card numbers, expiration dates, security codes and the name on the card. Stripe retains this data for as long as is legally required. How long we retain your data

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Contact form data is kept in perpetuity.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

All our website data is automatically backed up on our WP Engine hosting server. Those backups are purged every 60 days. For more information, check out WP Engine’s Privacy Policy and also learn more about their GDPR compliance policies on their Data Privacy Addendum page.

Other data may be transmitted to our Customer Relationship Management system, cloud storage systems, or our password keepers depending on usage. You will be notified on the forms you are submitting if data will be sent to any of these places.

Additional information

We never share your data with any unauthorized third parties. Our website does not receive any personal data from any third parties. We do not make any automated decisions or do any profiling with any of the data we collect.

CodeGeek follows all industry best practices to protect your data and will report any data breach to users within 72 hours of discovering the breach in accordance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
