Great post Ron! I like your friend's advice. My father read the poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling to me growing up. Barring the fact that at the end it reads 'And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!', it has served as a great guideline for me. When I am faced with disappointment I always remember the line 'If you can meet with triumph and disaster, And treat those two imposters just the same.'

What a great piece. I find it interesting that most people don't think about the time, effort, and manpower that go into being creative. I'm actually surprised speculative design is even an option because I would never ask someone to take the time to design something for me, so I can decide IF I want to buy it. I appreciate and support your stance. Good for you.

Ron, Brilliant post and I think this approach crosses over in to all types of creative work including logo development, general graphic design and pretty much anyone who has to write a proposal to get work....you just don't want to give away the cow for free!

You are so right, Mark. And as web designers and developers, it's our job to keep educating our clients. "It doesn't have to look the same in every browser." I'm not saying that's going to be easy, but it's worth doing.

It's such a practical approach, saves development time, and can save the client money. The reality is that when your mom visits the site, she isn't going to open two web browsers and then call you up and say "Hey! It doesn't look the same in IE6 as it does in Firefox!" As long as she can access all the content, utilize content-related functionality, and the site is consistent with the client's branding, we are meeting the client's business needs.

Almost all the big-name web designers and developers at the conference are now taking this approach including Jeremy Keith, Dan Cedarholm, Jeffrey Zeldman (Happy Cog), and Andy Clarke.

That's all well and good, sadly the reality is clients don't share this view. And it will take some time, specially when so many are holding onto IE6 so tightly.

It was a big surprise when I first learned that the moisture from front range upslopes was coming from the Gulf. The other thing that I wouldn't have guessed was how localized the precipitation can be in an upslope. If the low pressure system gets parked, a small strip of the front range can just get nailed with snow and areas just a few miles away will get nothing.

A few years back, one of the faster-moving hurricanes plowed through South Carolina and wound up creating an upslope in the Appalachians in North Carolina.

Nice description of the upslope storm. This is my first winter in CO and I heard a lot of people talk about the upslope storms and how they just dump snow along the front range. I experienced my first one on 3/26/09, which left 14-18" in Boulder. Then a few days later on 4/1 we got 4" of snow. Now they're forecasting another foot overnight tonight (4/3)! I love the snow, but I'm kind of bummed that this is happening now instead of 2-3 months ago.
BTW - Not to be a douche, but sublimation refers to a solid transitioning to a gas, not the other way around. You mean to say precipitate, which refers to a solid forming out of a liquid/gas phase (i.e. snow). Trust me, I'm a doctor (but not the kind that helps people! ;).
